Understanding TPLO Surgery for Dogs

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury is one of the most common causes of hind limb lameness in dogs. This is similar to an ACL injury in humans. When the CCL ruptures, the tibia is able to slide forward abnormally, leading to joint instability, inflammation, and eventually arthritis. Tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) is a surgery aimed at stabilizing the stifle joint and preventing further damage.

The TPLO Procedure

The TPLO procedure utilizes a specialized circular saw blade to cut the tibia and rotate its top portion to make it level with the tibial plateau. This eliminates the tibia's ability to thrust forward. As the dog starts to bear weight during recovery, the femur and tibia will compress against each other, providing functional joint stability.

The surgery requires extensive equipment including:

  • Orthopedic surgical saw blades
  • Bone holding forceps
  • High speed surgical drill
  • Bone plating instruments
  • X-ray equipment

FAQs

What is the recovery time for TPLO surgery?

The recovery time for TPLO surgery is typically 8-12 weeks. Your dog will need to go through strict activity restriction during this time to allow the surgical site to heal properly. Most dogs are able to walk on the operated leg within a couple weeks but won't be allowed to run, jump, or play until at least 8 weeks post-op.

Is TPLO surgery painful for dogs?

There is some pain and inflammation associated with TPLO surgery. Your vet will prescribe medications to help control your dog's pain levels. It's important to restrict activity per your vet's instructions to allow proper healing and avoid complications. With appropriate rest and pain management, most dogs recover well.

How much does TPLO surgery cost?

The cost of TPLO surgery ranges from $3,000-$5,000 per knee. This includes the initial consultation, pre-op exams and diagnostics, the surgery itself, implants and surgical equipment, hospitalization time, and follow up appointments. Additional medications and physical therapy may incur more costs.

What is the success rate of TPLO surgery?

When performed by an experienced veterinary surgeon, TPLO surgery has a success rate over 90%. However, just like human ACL reconstructions, dogs may still be at risk for developing arthritis in the joint over time. Strictly following post-op protocols and rehabilitation helps ensure the best surgical outcome.
