Enjoy Hayrides, Mazes & Pumpkin Picking at Johnson Brothers Farm
About the Johnson Brothers and Their Pumpkin Patch
The Johnson family has been farming in southern New Jersey for over 60 years. Brothers Tim and Stephen Johnson took over the family farm from their parents, growing crops like corn, tomatoes, and peppers. However, about 15 years ago they decided to shift their focus and convert several fields into a pick-your-own pumpkin patch and fall activity farm.
A Beautiful Farm Rich with Fall Activities
The Johnson brothers pumpkin patch has become incredibly popular, now drawing thousands of visitors over September and October. Families flock to enjoy hayrides out to the pumpkin fields, corn mazes for all ages, farm animals to pet and feed, and more. The natural beauty of the farm covered in colorful autumn leaves makes an ideal background for family photos.
Pick Your Own Perfect Pumpkins
The central feature luring people to the Johnson patch is the chance to pick your own pumpkins right off the vine. They grow over a dozen pumpkin varieties, from classic orange to white, blue, and green shades. You'll find plenty of tiny sugar pumpkins perfect for painting or centerpieces all the way up to massive 50 lb monsters. Wander through the leaf-strewn fields and find ones that appeal to you and your family.
Indulge Your Sweet Tooth
In addition to pumpkins, the Johnson brothers farm offers apple picking, raspberries, and homegrown corn. Use your harvest for creative recipes and cooking at home. Or satisfy your sweet tooth right away with delicious caramel apples, hot apple cider doughnuts, pumpkin bread and muffins, or homemade pies from the farm bakery using fruit freshly picked on the farm.
Planning Your Perfect Fall Day at the Patch
A trip to the Johnson brothers pumpkin patch makes a fantastic activity whether by yourself, as a couple, or with kids and grandkids. Here are some tips to have an amazing day:
Check the Season Opening Dates
This farm is open seasonally, as pumpkins and apples only grow at certain times of year. They typically open in late September once pumpkins reach peak ripeness, closing in early November after Halloween. Check their website for exact open dates each year.
Come Prepared for the Weather
Autumn weather can be unpredictable, with sunny warm afternoons turning into chilly evenings. Pack layers of clothing so everyone stays comfortable, and bring rain gear in case storms pass through. Waterproof shoes or boots will keep feet warm and dry as you trek through fields.
Budget Adequate Time
Rather than rushing through everything in an hour or two, plan to spend most of the afternoon. That leaves plenty of time for young kids to enjoy pony rides, corn boxes, taking farm animal selfies, and playing on bale mountains and slides. There's also an adventurous 5-acre corn maze that could easily take over an hour just to navigate out!
Come Hungry - And Thirsty!
Nothing works up an appetite like spending hours out in the fresh air! Fuel up with delicious hot apple cider doughnuts, pumpkin bread, pies, and coffee. Pack a lunch to picnic out in the fields, or pick up mouthwatering barbecue like ribs and brisket platters. Save room for caramel apples as sweet take-home treats too.
The Johnson brothers' pumpkin patch truly offers fantastic fall fun for everyone. Gorgeous scenery combined with u-pick produce, wagon rides, farm animals, challenging mazes, and delicious eats create magical memories to cherish. Reserve your day this autumn and make it a new family tradition!
FAQs
What are the best types of pumpkins for carving vs baking?
Some of the best pumpkin varieties for jack-o-lantern carving include Howden, Ghost, and Connecticut Field pumpkins. These have thicker walls that carve well and hold details. For baking pies and other recipes, sugar pumpkins and smaller pie pumpkins have the best flavor and smooth stringless flesh.
Do you have to pay/purchase anything to enjoy activities?
No admission fee or tickets are required just come to the farm and enjoy! However, there are charges for produce picked to take home plus food and treats. Wagon rides, corn mazes, animal petting areas etc. are all complementary with your produce purchase.
What time of day/days of the week are least crowded?
Weekdays tend to be less busy than peak weekends. And earlier on weekend mornings is quieter than late afternoons. Arrive either right at opening or in the last 2 hours before closing to beat the biggest crowds.
What COVID precautions have you implemented this year?
We sanitize high-touch areas regularly and have spaced out seating. Face coverings are required while on wagon rides or indoors. We also have ample open-air spaces to spread out and extra sanitizer stations around the farm.
