Our Wild Friday Night Out in Austin: Dinner Date Gone Wrong
Ever have one of those Friday nights that just doesn't go as planned? My husband and I were looking forward to a fun date night out on the town in Austin, Texas. With great restaurant recommendations and things to do, we were sure we'd find a good way to kick off our weekend. Unfortunately, our dinner plans took an unexpected turn for the worse.
Cocktails and Confusion
We started our evening at a local bar, hoping to enjoy a drink or two before dinner. Opting for something new on the menu, I ordered a Limoncello Spritz. Big mistake - one was all it took to get me quite tipsy! Between that and being overly full from snacks, I wasn't in any state to drive. Thankfully my thoughtful husband took care of returning some items to UPS for me first.
High Hopes for Israeli Fare
Next on our agenda was Azov, a newly opened Israeli restaurant in East Austin. The modern interior was inviting, and we were hoping for delicious authentic flavors. However, the menu prices seemed unreasonable for the portion sizes. A single piece of halloumi appetizer cost $15! My husband's chicken shawarma sandwich was $32 but required assembly.
A Bitter Disappointment
I selected a veggie sandwich that was massive in size but overwhelmingly bitter from the tahini. Between that intense flavor and being overly full still, I could barely finish it. My husband agreed his meal was overpriced for the minimalist presentation and taste. Unfortunately our high hopes for the cuisine were dashed by this dining experience.
A Stomachache Ends the Night
We left Azov disappointed and decided to call it an early night. Nursing stomach pains from all that tahini, we curled up at home wishing for a do-over! While Austin offers lots of fun, it seems this restaurant needs more work to live up to the hype. Maybe next Friday will be a smoother one for date night.
