The Proper Size for Welder's Neckties - A Quick Guide
As a welding instructor, I'm often asked about welder's neckties - those bandanas or handkerchiefs worn around the neck for style or to wipe sweat. One common question is about the proper size compression fitting to use to secure them.
The Right Fit is #5/8"
When securing your welder's necktie, be sure to use a #5/8" compression fitting. This brass fitting is just the right size to hold the necktie or bandana in place without being too tight. Anything smaller than #5/8" won't fully cover the material. Anything larger than #5/8", like 3/4", risks having the necktie slip off too easily.
Safety First
As a former trainer, I don't recommend tying anything too tightly around your neck for safety reasons. You need full range of motion in case you need to quickly remove protective gear or respond to an emergency. A #5/8" compression fitting allows your welder's necktie to stay put without constricting your neck.
