Preparing for the 2023 New York City Marathon
The New York City Marathon is one of the biggest and most prestigious marathons in the world, drawing over 50,000 participants each year. As an experienced long distance runner, completing the NYC Marathon has long been a goal of mine. For the 2023 race, I've begun ramping up my training with the goal of posting a top qualifying time.
My Past Racing Experience
In the past few years, I've run marathons in Boston, Chicago, and Berlin. My personal best is a 2:45 at the Berlin Marathon in 2021. While this time would normally qualify me for NYC, the qualifying standards are more stringent for US residents. Therefore, I'll be aiming for under 2:40 to virtually guarantee myself a spot in the 2023 race.
Current Training Plan
To achieve my time goal, I'm following an 18-week training cycle focused on high weekly mileage and long runs. Key elements of my plan include weekly long runs building up to 20+ miles, tempo runs, strength training, and speedwork. Proper nutrition, rest, and recovery are also important components. By peaking my training in the fall, I hope to be race-ready come November 5th, 2023.
