The History of Corazón Tequila

Corazón was founded in 2009 by a group of entrepreneurs who wanted to bring an authentic and premium-quality tequila to the American market. They chose the name "Corazón" because it means "heart" in Spanish, representing their passion for the spirit.

Corazón chose to produce its tequilas in the heart of Mexico's Jalisco region, where many of the world's finest tequilas originate. They partnered with several small family-owned distilleries located near the town of Atotonilco El Alto to create their unique tequila recipes.

A Focus on Quality and Tradition

From the very beginning, Corazón emphasized quality and tradition in all aspects of its tequila production. The agave plants used to make Corazón are sustainably sourced from the red volcanic soils of the Los Altos region of Jalisco. They are slow-cooked in traditional brick ovens and fermented with naturally harvested yeasts.

The distillation process involves small-batch copper pot stills. This ensures attention to detail and consistency in each bottle of Corazón Tequila. All varieties are bottled at 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume).

The Corazón Tequila Portfolio

Corazón currently offers three core expressions: Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo. The Blanco is an unaged white tequila with bright and peppery flavors. It makes an excellent mixer or palate cleanser in cocktails.

The Reposado is aged a minimum of two months in American oak barrels, acquiring aromas and flavors of vanilla, butterscotch, and spice. The Añejo ages for 12 months in oak barrels, developing deeper caramel and wood tones.

Introducing Corazón Weller Single Barrel Reposado

In 2022, Corazón partnered with Buffalo Trace Distillery, makers of Weller Bourbon, to release a special single barrel reposado tequila. This unique expression combined Corazón's excellent reposado with additional aging in previously used Weller Bourbon barrels.

The Inspiration Behind the Partnership

Buffalo Trace had experimented in the past with extra aging some of their products in tequila barrels. When they connected with the team at Corazón, they realized this was an opportunity to try the process in reverse.

Reposado tequila gains lovely oaky, vanilla notes from the standard brief period aging in barrels. The thought was that spending extra time in bourbon casks could enhance these barrel-influenced flavors even further.

Tasting Notes & Profile

The Corazón Weller Single Barrel Reposado indeed exhibits deeper wood and vanilla compared to Corazón's core Reposado. There are richer caramel flavors along with a touch of almond and baking spice. The finish shows wonderful mingling of sweet oak with agave and fruit.

While this unique tequila picks up extra bourbon cask character, it still maintains the underlying agave essence typical of Corazón's expressions. This special release is bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).

Where to Find Corazón Weller Single Barrel Reposado

Supplies of Corazón Weller Single Barrel Reposado are limited as only a small number of specially selected barrels were utilized. It saw very exclusive retail distribution mostly in Colorado along with some other US markets.

For tequila fans and aficionados, part of the appeal lies in the exclusive nature of this special collaboration release. Given the buzz behind both the Weller and Corazón brands, these special edition bottles quickly disappeared from liquor store shelves.

Get It While You Can

Those eager to try this unique fusion of American straight bourbon and Mexican reposado tequila will need to monitor the secondary liquor market. Specialty spirits resellers and collectors often handle small residual stocks of in-demand limited edition bottles.

Expect to pay a premium over the $70-$80 MSRP given the rarity and unusual story behind Corazón Weller Single Barrel Reposado Tequila.
