It didn’t take long for surfers and watersports enthusiasts to embrace polar fleece and its quick-drying properties. By the mid 1980s, surf brands like Ocean Pacific (Op), Gotcha, and Lightning Bolt surfwear began making pullover fleeces to sell as lifestyle apparel. Other action sports brands quickly followed suit. Fleece allowed these brands to produce soft, warm garments suited for both active outdoor adventure and relaxed streetwear style.

Over the next two decades, fleece exploded into the mainstream public consciousness. Its affordability and versatility made it a wardrobe staple. Soon non-outdoor brands at every price point began offering basic pullovers and zip jackets. Variations like microfleece, anti-pill fleece and performance attributes like stretchiness and wind/water resistance widened its range of uses.

In today’s surfwear market, fleece remains one of the most ubiquitous materials. Classic pullover hoodies and full-zip jackets can be found across brands like Billabong, Quicksilver, Ripcurl, Volcom and many more. These fleece styles form the foundation of every surfer’s casual ensemble thanks to qualities like:

Thanks to athletic-inspired cuts, features and color blocking, surf fleeces have an on-trend streetwear aesthetic as well. For the eco-conscious, some brands now offer fleece made from recycled plastics or wool fabrics for better sustainability.

In addition to advances in fabric and fit, graphic prints and slogan embellishments on fleeces jackets communicate the surf lifestyle that brands embody. Tapping into themes like adventure, wanderlust and exploration allows fans to literally “wear” their cultural influences. Limited collaborations and artist series with musicians, photographers and influencers also drop periodically.
