As my bus pulled into the gates of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp in Oyo state, my heart was racing. After weeks of anticipation, I was finally here to start my 21 days of camping as a corps member. Stepping off the bus, I took in the sights and sounds of the bustling orientation camp. The air was filled with enthusiastic chatter as corps members from across the country converged. While part of me was nervous about the weeks ahead, I mostly felt thrilled to start this new chapter.

Settling into the Dorms

The first stop after registering was finding my bunk in the crowded dorms. Thankfully I had brought a mattress topper, pillow and linens to make my cot a bit cozier. I met my bunkmates - fellow female corps members from different tribes and parts of Nigeria. We quickly bonded over our shared excitement and anxiety. After choosing beds and stowing away our gear, we headed to the parade ground for the opening ceremony.

Opening Ceremony & Orientation

The energy was palpable during the opening ceremony as over 2000 corps members sang the national anthem in unison. We listened eagerly as the camp director gave a motivating speech about the opportunity ahead of us to serve our nation. The rest of the day flew by with orientations about the schedule, activities, rules and expectations. We learned all the chants and songs we would need to participate in the daily parades and exercises. By the time orientation wrapped up, I felt prepared and eager for the official start of activities the next day.

Typical Camp Routine

Our days at the Oyo NYSC camp quickly fell into a predictable routine. Every morning we woke up before dawn, rushed to get dressed in our khaki uniforms and raced to the parade ground for the flag raising ceremony. This included synchronized marching, saluting and singing to welcome each new day. The early start was challenging at first, but it got my blood pumping and made me feel like a true soldier!

Breakfast Time

After parade, we headed straight to the dining hall for breakfast. This was always a mad dash as 2000 corps members jostled to get a share of the food and a place to sit in the crowded hall. The cooks did their best to feed the masses dishes like bread, fried eggs, beans and tea. I quickly learned to get there early or risk going hungry until lunch call!

Morning Activities

The rest of the morning was filled with activities like physical training, flag marches around camp, lectures, skill acquisition programs and rehearsals for cultural performances. This kept us active and engaged as we bonded with fellow corps members. I particularly enjoyed learning traditional dances and costumes from cultures across Nigeria as we prepared for the campfire night.

Afternoon Free Time

After lunch, we finally got some free time to rest or socialize. This was when I loved exploring the camp with my new friends. We browsed the makeshift shops run by streetwise "Mami market" vendors who snuck in to sell snacks, toiletries and supplies. We took silly photos under the iconic camp entrance sign as we bonded over shared stories and dreams. For many of us, NYSC was our first time being away from home for so long. Having this community made the experience feel more manageable.

Evening Schedule

Evenings were for more lectures, dinner, socializing and getting ready for the next day. We had an hourly roll call after dinner to make sure everyone was accounted for. Lights out was strictly enforced at 10 pm, not that any of us had trouble falling asleep after such long, active days!

Inter-Platoon Competitions

We were assigned platoons early on and competed fiercely against other platoons in sports, dance, parade, tent inspections and more. Winning brought glory to your platoon mates. I'll never forget how hard we practiced for the track and field tournament. Our tireless efforts paid off when we won the 4x100 meter relay!

Campfire Night

This was one of the most anticipated events. Each platoon put on elaborate cultural performances highlighting dances, costumes, songs and instruments from their ethnic groups. It was incredible to see Nigeria's diversity showcased in such a colorful, vibrant way. We danced and sang well into the night under the stars as fast friends regardless of our backgrounds.

Visitors Day

On the last Sunday of camp, family members could visit. I was so happy to see my parents and younger sisters after nearly 3 weeks away. They were amazed by how radically camp had transformed me into a disciplined corper. We excitedly caught up as I showed them my platoon and the inner workings of daily life at the camp. It gave me renewed determination to finish out my last week strong.

End of Camp: Passing Out Parade

The highlight of Oyo NYSC camp was undoubtedly the Passing Out Parade on the final day. After the colorful cultural performances the night before, this was a formal ceremony to mark our transition from orientation to deployment. As we marched in sync across the parade ground one last time, we sang the NYSC anthem with pride and nostalgia. When it was announced that we were now officially corps members, wild cheering erupted. There were lots of hugs, photos and tears as new friends promised to stay in touch.

Getting Posted to Places of Primary Assignment

The final step was receiving our postings. This announced where each of us would be deployed for the remaining year of service - our Place of Primary Assignment (PPA). I was thrilled to be posted to a secondary school near my home city where I would teach English. I said emotional goodbyes to all my amazing platoon mates deployed to different corners of Oyo state. After 3 intense weeks together, they felt like family.

Reflecting on My NYSC Camp Experience

As I left camp and adjusted to life after orientation, I reflected on my incredible NYSC camp experience. Those 3 weeks gave me lifelong friends and memories in a culturally vibrant environment. The rigor instilled discipline, purpose and national pride that I will carry with me forever. I am so grateful I had the chance to serve Nigeria and find myself in the process.
