Capturing the Beauty of Ruby Beach

Known for its rugged, picturesque scenery, Ruby Beach is one of the most iconic locations in Washington state. Getting to Ruby Beach

Reaching Ruby Beach requires a bit of effort, but the payoff is immense. The beach rests inside the boundaries of Olympic National Park, with access from Highway 101. I embarked on the 0.6 mile Ruby Beach Trail through temperate coastal rainforest before arriving at the coast. The moderately difficult downhill hike took me past massive Sitka spruces, Western Hemlocks, and vibrant maple trees.

Sea Stack Photography

One of Ruby Beach's claims to fame is its abundance of sea stacks. These freestanding rock formations tower above the tide lines, yielding drama-filled images. I was thrilled to photograph the aptly named Candle Rock, an 80-foot sea stack resembling a thick candle. Other notable stacks include Island Rock, Crab Apple Rock, Pyramid Rock, and the famous Ruby Beach Arch.

Tidal Pools

When the tide goes out, a wondrous world of tidal pools appears along Ruby Beach's shore.
