Experience the Legendary El Dorado Rodeo in Central Kansas
The Legendary El Dorado Rodeo
Nestled in the heart of central Kansas lies the small town of El Dorado, home to the legendary El Dorado Rodeo. For over 50 years, this rodeo has attracted visitors from far and wide with its wild west atmosphere, family-friendly environment, and world class competitors.
History of the El Dorado Rodeo
The El Dorado Rodeo can trace its origins back to 1967 when a group of local ranchers and businessmen came together to create an annual rodeo event to showcase cowboy culture and provide good family entertainment. They formed the El Dorado Roundup Club and leased land south of town to build a rodeo arena.
The very first El Dorado Rodeo was held in June of 1968 and was an immediate hit, drawing in over 7,000 eager spectators. Over the years it continued to grow, gaining a reputation for being one of the best small town rodeos in the Midwest and attracting top cowboys and cowgirls from across the nation.
Rodeo Events
Today the El Dorado Rodeo spans four action-packed days every June and features all the classic rodeo events that spectators know and love. Fans will find rodeo mainstays like bull riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping and barrel racing on the schedule. The rodeo also includes specialty acts like the death-defying motorcycle stunt riders of the Nerveless Nocks Thrill Show.
One of the most popular events is the wild bronc riding competition, where cowboys try to ride bucking horses for eight seconds without falling off. It's a wild and dangerous event that gets the crowds roaring. On the other end of the spectrum is the precise art of tie-down roping, where riders have to quickly rope a running calf from horseback and secure its legs within a strict time limit.
A Family Friendly Environment
A big part of what makes the El Dorado Rodeo so special is its focus on providing good old-fashioned family fun. Kids 12 and under get free grandstand admission, so it's an affordable outing for parents. The rodeo has fun interactive areas like pony rides, calf scrambles, stick horse races, and a petting zoo that delight children.
There's also live country music from local bands each night to get spectators two-stepping. Fair-style food like funnel cakes, turkey legs and curly fries offer State Fair classics without the long drive. And the friendly, small-town atmosphere makes everyone feel welcome to sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
World Class Cowboy Competitors
The El Dorado Rodeo has gained a reputation for attracting some of the best rodeo talent around. Big name cowboys and cowgirls come to compete for over $80,000 in prize money as well as coveted championship points. Past competitors include world champions like Trevor Brazile, Tuf Cooper, Mary Walker and more.
The rodeo committees hand-select which cowboys will receive invitations to compete, ensuring they bring top-level talent in every event. This gives local rodeo fans a chance to see elite athletes in action without traveling far from home. And the cowboys enjoy competing at a well-run rodeo in front of knowledgeable, enthusiastic crowds.
Experience the Legend
For over 50 years, the El Dorado Rodeo has brought the thrill of the old west to central Kansas. Its winning blend of family fun, authentic cowboy action and community spirit makes it a can't-miss June tradition. Don't miss your chance to experience a true legend on the rodeo circuit for yourself!
